FOREWORD 2007 seems to be under a good star for all rockfans. The most famous bands of the international rockscene came back to their record-studios already some months ago for working on their new albums. Cds of Good Charlotte, Linking Park, Panic At the Disco!, Simple Plan, Bullet For My Valentine or also Green Day will flood the musicshops in the next months and bring new glamour into the rockscene. But first of all the band will produce headlines, that the fans already expect longingly. After the mega-success of “Schrei” Tokio Hotel comes with “Zimmer 483”, a remarkable second album, that is in no way inferior to the first one. Bill, Tom, Gustav and Georg didn`t rest on their laurels and made it, found new musical horizons, that will throw some fans out off balance. The result is an album with no concessions, a rough diamond in best tradition of rock. The album is a daredevil project, a constant tightrope walk, at which you can be carried away by a maelstrom. “Zimmer 483”, based on Bill`s magical voice, will Tokio Hotel deserve credit in Germany for sure, but maybe also internationally. For that reason we have made the decision to dedicate a big part of this special rock-edition to Tokio Hotel. Hey, fans of Tokio Hotel, Good Charlotte or Green Day, this edition is especially for you!
*INTERVIEW* BILL
Bill is a versatile human being. By nature more shy and reserved, he gives himself up to his audience with skin and hair and moves off a big show at every concert. What is hidden behind this charismatic singer of Tokio Hotel? We tried to find out that in this very personal interview.
In which extend have you contributed to the new album?
If we work on a new album, normally I care about the lyrics. I have the need to write constantly, what I experience and to catch my feelings and thoughts in words. During the last two years since the appearance of our first album, I put periodically ideas for new songs down on a memo pad. I used them as basis and little by little the songs of “Zimmer 483” developed.
What has made you compose your first song?
This sounds maybe weird, but I would say, the boredom! Some time, when I was just alone, I did not know so surely what I should do and there I decided to write about what comes in my mind and to compose songs from that. Thus the first version from “Leb`die Sekunde” has developed, that - after some changes -became finally part of the album “Schrei”. Then I wrote more lyrics, because I have nearly always a memo pad with me, to put down my thoughts in writing, that comes to my mind.
Do you feel anytimes boredom, since you have so much success with Tokio Hotel?
I have to admit, that happens nearly not anymore! Since two years we are so in demand and sometimes it even happens, that I miss sorrowful the time, when I felt bored alone in my room. Silent moments become more and more rare, but I won`t complain of that. I always wanted to sing and live from music and for nothing in the world I would like to change with somebody.
In which connection has your life changed the most?
In every connection! Two years ago I could go to every place without problems without being recognized immediately. Today this is nearly impossible. It becomes more and more complicated, so that I can nearly not go on street anymore. Add to this I could go to school some time ago, also that is not possible anymore. But honestly said, school is not the issue I`m missing the most….(laughs). At any rate, besides some exceptions in my private live, it doesn`t bother me at all being famous. I was always very ambitious and I`m very proud of the career of Tokio Hotel. Today I have the life, I`ve always dreamed of and I won`t complain of that, for sure.
How is it possible for you, from your position as star today, to describe painful emotions?
You should not forget, that we have just since 1,5 years a “starlife”. I know boredom, doubts and disappointment very well, so that I can talk about it. I had a totally normal childhood and this is also today one of my most important sources of inspiration. But also our life today brings us new ideas daily. Our journeys, the emotions, we experience at our concerts, all people, we meet , are sources of inspiration, what I use for composing new songs.
Can you tell us a bid more about “Übers Ende der Welt”? Which is the message of the song?
“Übers Ende der Welt” is for all those people, who have the impression, being on the wrong way and don`t know, in which direction they should go on. The song expresses hope and shall encourage to develop and ask questions to yourself. It`s never too late to make it different, never too late, to realize your dreams. It`s important for us, to send a message full of hopes to our fans. We know, that it is important to overcome impediments and we are convinced, that the impossible can become with the right attitude possible.
A lot of Tokio Hotel fans have discussions on websites, that are exclusively dedicated to the band. Do you look anytimes at such websites for knowing, what fans are thinking about you?
When we release a new album, the opinion of our fans is very important for us. So it happens, that we look at some pages in the web to get to know, about what fans are talking and what they think about our music. But it happens rarely, that we take part in discussion-forums or chat-rooms.
There are crazy rumours about you in the web. Which one has surprised you the most?
Recently someone has maintained on a website, that I would be a girl! That is really totally exaggerated! When I was younger, sometimes it happened, that someone thought, I was a girl, but you have to be blind, thinking that nowadays. I admit, that I`m not the masculine guy, but to go so far and maintain, I would be a girl is a step over the borderline.
Many girls are asking questions about your private life. Are you still solo?
Yes, I`m afraid so. And that is the case since almost two years. I have nothing against falling in love, but a relationship is hardly compatible with my life at the moment. And so I prefer being alone at the moment, because I don`t like short adventures. But I am sure, that will change soon and that I will get to know someone unexpectedly.
Do you have some kind of idea, how the woman of your dreams should be? Are there things, that are especially important for you?
When I see a woman for the first time, I pay strongly attention to her outer appearance. She should be sexy and it is important, that her clothes fit to her. I pay also much attention to her hands, I really don`t know, why. But for me hands say much about the personality of someone. I like women with beautiful hands and well-groomed finger nails. That can seem idiotically, but it is that way. Besides my intended girl-friend should be a very positiv person. I am more pessimistic by nature, thus my partner should pull me out of that and prove me daily, how beautiful life can be.
Are you jealous, when you have a girl-friend?
Yes, very much. I took always hold of someone, when I like somebody. But the reason is maybe, that I`m frightened to lose somebody.
How do you react, when somebody criticize Tokio Hotel? Do you accept criticism or don`t criticism interest you at all?
Depends, from where und especially from whom the criticism come. I`ve already said, that we set great store by the opinion of our fans. When some fans say, they don`t like one song, then I take that seriously and look what`s maybe wrong with this song. I`m also open for criticism of our friends and family, because they don`t have a reason to fool us and they are totally honest. But sometimes it happens, that we are just critized because of pure jealousy. That are often people, who are nerved by our success and want to harass us at that way.
How do they act?
They reprouch us being no real rockband, but being a boy band. But that leaves us cold, because we know, that this is totally rubbish. We know each other more than six years and we play music since our childhood. If you call that a boyband, then we have different views about such bands. If you have success, you should expect criticism. But mostly I am deaf to that, because I know, what I am worth.
In spite of an obvious shyness, it seems, that nothing can stop you, when you are on stage. Do you have limits, you won`t go beyond?
Yes, of course. We have a strong influence to our fans with our concerts and our lyrics and so we cannot go away with crossing some borderlines. But anyway I have never maintained, that we are models for others and I won`t control always all my actions and gestures. I`m a totally normal young person, who tries to give his best and and act responsible, but I`m not at all perfect. I hope, that our fans understand that, when they read something about me in a situation, they don`t like.
You will soon play some concerts in Germany and Europe. Can you say something about the concerts yet?
I just can say, that we will rock! We cannot wait to sing our new songs and to see our fans again. The concerts are the most important for me in that job. Because, when I sing in front of my fans, then I am really myself.
*INTERVIEW* TOM
om is reputed to have a big mouth and to answer to all questions open and honestly. For that reason we tried to find out, whether the guitarrist of Tokio Hotel is willing to give honest answers to so intimate topics like love, friendship or even death. Put your cards on the table!
Tell us first a bid about this new album… Is “Zimmer 483” in your opinion more personal than “Schrei”?
No, I don`t think so. For me both albums are similar, because they are directly inspired by our own life and how we feel about the issues, that happen to us. But anyway the topics we are touch in this album, are different. Since the recording of “Schrei” two years have gone and naturally our sight on things have changed. Some songs of “Zimmer 483” have to do with these two crazy years, we have experienced, with things, we liked, but also with issues, that were annoying for us. Besides “Zimmer 483” is, seen pure musically, an enormous development for us. Bill`s voice has increased strongly since the first album, what allows him, to express more emotions. And I believe for me, that I have developed as musician. Through the constant concerts I can strike some special chords much easier, that seemed to me complicated in the past.
Are concerts for you a reason for being frightened or just fun?
A little bid of both and that is exactly what I like. I like the increase of adrenalin before every concert. I can say to me again and again, that this is not the first time and that all will be good – I`m every time in panic.
What happens exactly after the concerts, when you`re back in your loge?
Mostly we start at once to take us time for an assessment of the concert. We analyse, how we played, the way, the audience reacted, but we also talk about mistakes, that we maybe made technically seen. After that there are always people, who visit us in our loge. That can be fans, but also journalists, people from the record company or members of our family. One thing is for sure – we are never alone! (laughs)
How has your fame changed your connection to people, you don`t know, but who wanna get to know you?
I have to admit, that I became with the success more suspicious to other people, who I don`t know and act like as we would be good friends. It is that way, that most of the people we meet and who try to ingratiade themselves with us, are searching their advantage. And of course, I don`t talk about the fans, but of those, who wanna profit by our fame. If you`re honest, there is a lot of hypocrisy around us. You have a friendship or not, but you shouldn`t pretend a friendship. I have always thought that and I see no reason, why I should change my opinion.
Your songs deal often with difficult topics and some lyrics go so far, that even death is touched on. Is that on your mind?
It`s always difficult being alive without thinking about death, because these are issues you cannot separate unfortunately. But I am more an optimist and if someone asks me, whether I have already thought about suicide, then my answer is: no. But, I would like to touch on this topic in one of our songs. A lot of young persons think about it and honestly I cannot imagine, how I could lose so much the love to life. We all have problems, but if you are able to find the power for going on, then you will be stronger than before.
Do you remember the beginnings as musician?
I remember, that Bill and me were very young, so at the age of six or seven, when we wanted to make music. We looked in TV concerts and had fun to imitate the bands. Then Bill started writing lyrics and I began a short time later with learning how to play guitar. We had luck being always encouraged by our parents; they supported us moraly and financially. Because my stepfather is also guitarist, he understood our passion for music and our striving for becoming a professional band one day. When we had our first concert, our parents were in the first row and rooted for us. They transported our instruments in their car and sang our songs by heart. They were our first fans and we have to thank them for everything we have reached and where we are today.
How do your parents react about all the rumours that are going around?
At the beginning they called every time, when they had read something about us, at once and asked, whether these rumours are true. But nowadays that happens not so often anymore. They know, that journalist often exaggerate. There are the most craziest things in print, that develop by a small anecdote and are changed so much, that there are just lies left in the end. That`s part of the job and so we nearly don`t pay attention to all the stories they tell about us.
With the release of the second album you will play one concert after the other, what means, that you won`t get enough sleep in the next months. Do you miss anytimes your bed?
If you have decided for this job, you have to accept the small, but necessary troubles like being rare at home. It`s correct, that we have slept in the last weeks more in hotels than in our own beds and that won`t change with the promotion of our new album. Fortunately we have always contact with our families and our closest friends during the tour. That helps us, when we feel some kind of homesickness. But life on tour has also his good sides. We are happy to meet our fans and give concerts all around the world. In the last time we travelled through Europe and it`s simply cool to find out, how our music has crossed the borderlines. It`s worth to stay some nights away from home, when you meet all the fans abroad.
It seems, that you talk very open about making conquests in relation to girls. Are you somebody, who has one one-night-stand after the other?
I have to admit, that I don`t like to have a lasting relationship at the moment. And it wouldn`t be possible with the life in our band. But – contrary to Bill – I don`t feel awful having one-night-stands. On the contrary, it`s very exciting. I`m somebody, who wants to enjoy every moment and who seize the opportunity, when I have one due to a meeting. But that doesn`t mean, that I hunt every skirt, but when I like a girl on a party, then it can happen.
And when you are on stage, in front of you hundreds of girls, who would give everything, to have a moment with you, how is that?
On the contrary to that, what a lot of fans believe, you see from the stage, what happens in the audience. It happens sometimes during a concert, that I recognize a girl in the first row and smile to her discretly. I wanna show her, that I have seen her. If we then meet each other after the show and there is a fire between us, then I can be seduced.
Your look is totally different to the one of your brother, but you can see, as like it is with your brother, that you wanna emphasize with your clothes. Does the style reflect your character?
You could say that. When I let grow my hair some years ago, the boys in my school made jokes about me. Then I let grow my hair all the more, just to show my resistance and that they couldn`t annoy me. Today my dreadlocks are nearly one metre long and I don`t plan to cut them. Sometimes they are a little bid in my way, but I couldn`t imagine at all having a bald head.
You talked about resistance- you way of being a rebell. Do you need that to feel different to others?
I don`t would go so far, but it`s true that I like doing things going beyond over the normal. I like to question established orders, also when I shock sometimes people around me. A little bid provocation never harms and I like to stay like that, honestly.
People talk about you as person who doesn`t reserve judgement and says, what he thinks. If you answer to questions in interviews, do you try to answer honestly or to provocate?
I`m more honest. If somebody asks me a question, I answer simply without talking around the issue. It can happen, that I exaggerate, but just for a good purpose. If we would always say the truth, then interviews would be very boring….
